No Shears or Moments Indicated in Beam on Elastic Foundation

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Why does the Beam on Elastic Foundation module report no shears or moments for my beam?

If you have set up a Beam on Elastic Foundation calculation and are seeing all zero values reported for shears and moments, chances are good that you have only applied full length uniformly distributed loads to the beam.  Under this type of loading, all of the soil springs compress uniformly, creating a uniform soil bearing pressure. But this actually produces no shears or moments in the beam.  The only way that a beam on an elastic foundation actually experiences nonzero moments and shears is when the loading includes loads other than full-length distributed loads.
