Calculation of Soil Pressures

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

How does the Restrained Retaining Wall module calculate soil pressures based on the settings for stem fixity and footing sliding?

In this module, unbalanced soil pressure can be the result of eccentricity of vertical loads or lateral shear at the top of the footing.  Here is a summary of what this module does, based on the settings used:

Stem is fixed to footing, sliding is not prohibited:

Moment due to eccentricity of vertical loads is assumed to be resisted by the stiffness of the stem, so it will not produce unbalanced soil pressure.

Moment due to lateral shear at the top of the footing is assumed to be resisted by the stiffness of the stem, so it will not produce unbalanced soil pressure.

Stem is fixed to footing, sliding is precluded:

Moment due to eccentricity of vertical loads is assumed to be resisted by the stiffness of the stem, so it will not produce unbalanced soil pressure.

No moment is created due to lateral shear at the top of the footing, because the shear is resisted by an adjacent slab at the elevation of the top of the footing.

Stem is pinned at connection to footing, sliding is not precluded:

Moment due to eccentricity of vertical loads will produce unbalanced soil pressure.

Moment due to lateral shear at the top of the footing will produce unbalanced soil pressure.
