Version 5.8 files

Can we import Version 5.8 files into the current version of SEL?

Unfortunately you can't for a few reasons. We did not make this decision lightly.....it was a project that got very far and then was ended.

Because the new version is so much more detailed there are many areas where direct importing of an old file will not work.  For example, consider loads and load combinations.  Version 5.8 considered load types such as "Live Load" and "Short Term Load".  But there is no direct way to map these older load types into the current version, because the new version has two different live load types and several short term load types.  The only solution to this particular conundrum was going to require more work on the part of the user to simply map the data, than the work it would take to re-enter the data in the new version.  And this was just one of many hurdles.  There are a lot of little things that don't map between the two versions.

The new version has every solver rewritten and uses the latest codes.  This means the calculation results could all be slightly different (or very different) than they were in previous versions. Although this represents a quantum leap forward for the software, it would likely invite a great deal of confusion as engineers would be inclined to compare and reconcile two sets of printouts.
