# Concrete Column

How to design concrete columns for biaxial bending and axial load across twelve cross-section shapes per ACI 318.

This module designs concrete columns that are subject to axial loads and lateral bending loads about both axes.

![](https://3283832020-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FiBJmBoewuy4ZcBC7RF3m%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-23ecabf2bdfd3a177d1ce0ee737036aad6d491cd%2FclipP134.gif?alt=media)

The module only uses strength design for concrete.

All calculations are according to the selected version of ACI 318.

The screen capture below shows the full screen for concrete column design. See items below for descriptions of items that are specific to the concrete column design module.

For general guidance on end fixity, loads, and load combinations, see [Columns](/docs/sel-user-manual/calculation-modules/column.md). For slenderness guidance, see [Slenderness](/docs/sel-user-manual/calculation-modules/column/all-columns/column-slenderness.md).

### General

The area indicated in the screen capture below is specific to the concrete column selection.

The two buttons ![](https://3283832020-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FiBJmBoewuy4ZcBC7RF3m%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-955d4a253b280823b5467038bfb086810e341dc6%2FclipP613.gif?alt=media)and ![](https://3283832020-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FiBJmBoewuy4ZcBC7RF3m%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-3a762fbe6b4b46e99df2241642813402e50cc5d0%2FclipP614.gif?alt=media)immediately set the value for elastic modulus "E" to the values as described on the button.

**Seismic Design Categories and Concrete Column Limitations**

Concrete columns are subject to different requirements depending on the seismic design category (SDC) and whether they are part of the Seismic Force-Resisting System (SFRS). The module completes the full analysis in every case and displays a warning when additional Chapter 18 seismic provisions apply, since those provisions are outside the scope of this module. Here is how the module handles each scenario:

**Column is part of the Seismic Force-Resisting System:**

| **SDC** | **Behavior**                                                            | **Chapter 18 Reference** |
| ------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------ |
| A       | No limitations.                                                         | -                        |
| B | Results displayed with warning to refer to additional ACI requirements. | Section 18.3 |
| C | Results displayed with warning to refer to additional ACI requirements. | Section 18.4 |
| D, E, F | Results displayed with warning to refer to additional ACI requirements. | Section 18.7             |

**Column is NOT part of the Seismic Force-Resisting System:**

| **SDC** | **Behavior**                                                            | **Chapter 18 Reference** |
| ------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------ |
| A, B, C | No limitations.                                                         | -                        |
| D, E, F | Results displayed with warning to refer to additional ACI requirements. | Section 18.14            |

The warning references the active ACI 318 edition and appears both on screen and on the printed report. For scenarios where warnings are displayed, the design professional must refer to the relevant ACI sections and ensure compliance separately, as those additional requirements are outside the scope of this module.

### Concrete Shape

This tab is specific to the concrete column selection. It allows you to select from 12 different column shapes. Simply click the button surrounding the column shape icon and the screen below will change to allow specific data input for measurements and reinforcing layout.

Following the screen capture below we will show ALL the data input areas for ALL the column shapes with descriptions as needed.

Note that this module does a very detailed biaxial analysis of the column cross section using exact numerical methods.

**Phi:**

* ACI 318-14: Calculated per Table 21.2.2, where φ is obtained by linear interpolation between 0.65 (or 0.75 for spiral ties) and 0.90 based on a net tensile strain (εt) ranging from the yield strain (εty) to 0.005, respectively.

* ACI 318-25: Taken as the minimum between the following two values:
* Phi - 21.2.2: Calculated per Table 21.2.2, where φ is obtained by linear interpolation between 0.65 (or 0.75 for spiral ties) and 0.90 based on a net tensile strain (εt) ranging from the yield strain (εty) to εty + 0.003, respectively.
* Phi - Max: Calculated per Section 21.2.2.3, where φ Max is obtained by linear interpolation between 0.65 (or 0.75 for spiral ties) and 0.90 based on a nominal axial strength (Pn) ranging from the nominal axial strength at the balanced strain condition (Pn,bal) to 0.1 f'c Ag, respectively.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://enercalc.com/docs/sel-user-manual/calculation-modules/column/concretecolumn.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
