# Resolving ENERCALC File Permissions Errors

How to resolve ENERCALC file permission errors caused by Windows Defender Controlled Folder Access.

ENERCALC says that file access is blocked

We have found instances where **Windows Defender Controlled Folder Access (CFA)** may block ENERCALC from creating or modifying database files stored in the Public Documents folder, which are required for the program to function properly.

Please follow these steps to check if CFA is enabled:

1. Open **Windows Security** from the Start menu.
2. Go to **Virus & threat protection > Manage ransomware protection**.
3. Look for **Controlled folder access**.
4. If it shows **Off**, please contact <support@enercalc.com>. There may be another cause for the issue.

If it shows **On**, continue with the steps below.

1. In the same ransomware protection window, select **Allow an app through Controlled folder access**.
2. Click **Add an allowed app > Browse all apps**.
3. Navigate to the ENERCALC installation folder and select the executable. This is typically located at: C:\Program Files (x86)`\ENERCALC_20\ENERCALC.exe`.
4. Confirm your selection and restart the application.

After completing these steps, ENERCALC should be able to create and modify its database files without interruption. If you still see warning messages or experience issues, please contact <support@enercalc.com>.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://enercalc.com/docs/sel-faq/using-the-software/general-operation/resolving-enercalc-file-permis.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
