# Updating ENERCALC

How to check your installed version, check for a newer build, and let ENERCALC install updates automatically.

At **ENERCALC** we are continually improving and enhancing our software. The installed Windows and Mac builds check for a newer build each time you launch them, and you choose whether they install it for you.

{% hint style="info" %}
**NOTE:** The web version at <https://enercalc.app/> is always current. There is nothing to update and nothing to configure. Everything on this page applies only to the installed Windows and Mac builds, which behave the same as each other.
{% endhint %}

## Open the update settings

Select the dropdown arrow next to your organization name at the top of the window, then select **Settings**.

You can also get there from the main menu with **Settings > Organization Settings**.

Once the **Settings** screen opens, select **Updates** under **User** in the left-hand list. The **Application Updates** pane manages how ENERCALC updates itself on this computer.

## Check your installed version

**Installed Version** shows the build running on this computer, for example `1.26.10.20`. Quote this number when you contact support.

## Check for a newer build

**Update Status** shows a badge such as **UP TO DATE** and when ENERCALC last looked, for example "Last checked 4 hours ago". To look again right away, select **Check for Updates**.

<figure><img src="https://3955293234-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fo0Hz1rmQ42N26pw3zzDH%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-970173122c57db4432738123f5642475020ca633%2Fupdate-check-for-updates.png?alt=media" alt="The Application Updates pane showing Installed Version, an UP TO DATE badge, and the Check for Updates button"><figcaption><p>Select Check for Updates to look for a newer build straight away.</p></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
**NOTE:** When you choose to install an update, ENERCALC closes and relaunches itself to finish. Save your work first.
{% endhint %}

## Install updates automatically

Under **Preferences**, turn on **Install Updates Automatically** and ENERCALC installs a new build for you when it finds one.

Leaving it off does not stop ENERCALC looking. It still checks on launch and tells you when an update is waiting, so you decide when to install it.

<figure><img src="https://3955293234-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2Fo0Hz1rmQ42N26pw3zzDH%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-fbbb9eeb10e91f9726e8f882a3caedcbee292ba4%2Fupdate-auto-update.png?alt=media" alt="The Install Updates Automatically toggle switched on in the Preferences section"><figcaption><p>Install Updates Automatically switched on.</p></figcaption></figure>

This preference belongs to the installation it is set on, so you choose it separately on each computer you install ENERCALC on. There is no organization-wide setting, and an administrator cannot turn it on or off for everyone.

## Install from the download links instead

You can always skip the in-app route and install the newest build over the top of your current one. The download links always provide the most recent build.

<a href="https://install.enercalc.app/mac/ENERCALC-mac-arm64.dmg" class="button primary" data-icon="download">Download for Mac</a>

{% hint style="warning" %}
**WARNING:** The Mac build runs on Apple Silicon only. Intel Macs are not supported at this time.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://enercalc.com/docs/installation-activation/software-updates/auto-update.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
